THE TOWNS OF TUFO

Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana are considered the “villages of tuff”, and they are part of a very extensive area called Archaeological Park of Tuff characterized by the Cave Ways, ie real canyons trapped between suggestive and steep tuff walls.

The tufa rock is the element that characterizes the whole area, which stands out for the striking spurs of tuff that give the villages an ancient dress of rare beauty.

SORANO:

After only 9 km from Pitigliano you will arrive in Sorano, literally carved into the rock, ancient towers, alleys and streets, niches and cellars to explore.

The thing that you will be left with of Sorano is the panorama of the city from the Leopoldino Masso. A fortified terrace “carved in the living rock” built by the Grand Duke Leopold, who seems to emerge from the mountain.

SOVANA:

A small village that will stay in your heart. The charm of the old town is medieval.

It’s all concentrated in little space, demonstrating the importance of this city built on a stone of tuff. Few houses and only one street.

PITIGLIANO:

Pitigliano is nicknamed the Little Jerusalem, for the historical presence of a Jewish community, always well integrated in the social context. It is a jewel, an enchanted and fascinating place that seems to emerge from the tuff rock on which it rests.

The ochre-coloured buildings look like one with the rock.
