A jumble of things and people, lively, noisy. The residents who have the garden outside the town are wandering around like crazy: you will find them everywhere!

The Spanish Fortress is the predominant symbol of the country.

It was built to control the port in the 17th century, during the Spanish domination.

Today it hosts the permanent exhibitions “Submerged Memories” and “Masters of Axe”.

The view from its terraces is unique.

THE SEAFARING CHALLENGE:

Since 1937 the Palio Marinaro “runs” which takes place every 15th of August, which is the equivalent of the Palio di Siena.

The same “war” between the districts, the same eagerly awaited, the same great celebrations.

It ‘a competition between boats, called gozzi and each gozzo takes the name of a mistral wind, Gracale, Libeccio and Scirocco, with crews formed by a helmsman, representing the four city districts: Cross, Pilarella, Valley and Fortress and 4 rowers who must travel for 10 times a course of 400 m, distance between 2 buoys.

Its origin is born from a legend: the escape of a boat of fishermen who escaped from the Saracen pirates that in 1600 infested these waters. The fishermen, rowing vigorously, found refuge at a cave and escaped danger.

There is great competition among the crews and a great athletic preparation, all year round!

And at the end ….. the great party for the winners, but not only!
